Step by step

How to automate trading on Upstox

Set it up once with these steps, in this order. Field names follow the Upstox connection form on Broker & Exchanges.

  1. Add Upstox on Tradetron

    On Broker & Exchanges, click Add Broker, pick Upstox and save with placeholder details for now. This unlocks Enable virtual server.

  2. Enable a virtual server

    On the broker's edit page, click Enable virtual server and pick a plan (from Rs 100 a month + GST). Tradetron emails you the server's address; Upstox accepts API orders only from an address you register with it.

  3. Create an app in Upstox

    In the Upstox developer portal, click + New App. Name it Tradetron, set the Redirect URL to https://upstox.tradetron.tech/login, paste the virtual server's address into Primary IP, set the Postback URL to https://127.0.0.1/ and leave the other fields blank.

  4. Confirm the app

    Accept the terms, click Continue, then Confirm plan (the app is free). The API key and secret appear under My Apps.

  5. Enter your keys and log in

    On Broker & Exchanges, enter api_key and api_secret and leave token blank. Save, then click the auth link and log in to Upstox; the token is generated when you reach the success page.

  6. Deploy a strategy

    Build a strategy in the no-code builder or pick one from the marketplace, choose Upstox as the broker and deploy. Live Offline runs it on live prices and shows each signal without placing an order; Live Auto places the orders at Upstox.

Every trading day. Before you trade each day, open the login link on your Upstox broker card and sign in. Upstox also ends the token at once if a registered address changes, and lets you change it only once a week.

Why the virtual server. Under SEBI's framework for retail algo trading, every Indian broker accepts API orders only from an address registered with it (all brokers from 1 April 2026). Your strategies run on Tradetron's servers, so the address Upstox needs is your virtual server's, never your home or office address.

Why do I need to log in to my broker every day?

Under the exchange rules for retail algo trading, every broker API session is logged out each day before the next trading day begins. So each broker asks you to log in again, or generate a new token, before you trade. It is not a Tradetron limit.

Can I backtest a strategy before running it on Upstox?
