01 · The data

What a Nifty options backtest replays.

WhatDetail
InstrumentsNIFTY options, weekly and monthly expiries, and the NIFTY 50 index; the other NSE index options too
Resolution1-minute bars: open, high, low, close and open interest
HistoryFrom January 2020; one backtest covers any window up to 5 years
Latest end date35 days before today (SEBI's 30-day lag on price data, plus a margin)
Option pricesThe real traded premium for each minute, not a pricing model
FillsEach leg fills at the minute's price, the same way the live engine runs
CostsBrokerage, slippage, STT, exchange charges, GST and stamp duty, from your cost profile
What replays faithfully
  • Rules on price, time, technical indicators and the strategy's own positions, P&L and variables.
  • Multi-leg option structures, stop losses, targets and re-entries, minute by minute, in order.
What it cannot reproduce
  • Anything inside a minute: there is no bid/ask spread or tick path, so the exact trigger moment is approximated.
  • Signals pushed in from outside (webhooks, APIs) and live account data such as margin or funds.
  • One whole trading day, 20 February 2024, is missing from the data; trades that day are skipped.
02 · Worked example

A NIFTY weekly short straddle, set up for a backtest.

SettingValue
UnderlyingNIFTY 50
LegsSell 1 lot ATM call and sell 1 lot ATM put, same strike, current weekly expiry
EntryFrom 9:20 am, once a day
ExitSquare off both legs at 3:15 pm
Run typeIntraday
WindowFor example 1 January 2024 to an end date at least 35 days before today
CostsYour broker's brokerage, a slippage figure and the statutory charges

Checked 24 Oct 2026: this exact setup passes Tradetron's backtest pre-flight (NFO data available, intraday run type). To test variants, add a stop loss or target, run each version as its own backtest and compare the reports.

Example, not advice. A short straddle has unlimited loss potential if NIFTY moves sharply. This shows how to set up a test; it is not a recommendation to trade it.

03 · Run it

From an idea to a backtest report, in six steps.

Then run it in Live Offline: live prices, every signal shown, no order placed. Want it to trade later? See how to connect Zerodha, Dhan, Upstox, Angel One or Fyers.

    Build the strategy
Sign up free and open the Strategy Builder (or the Option Wizard for guided option legs). Set the legs of your test, for example the straddle below. You can also describe it to Claude or ChatGPT with the Tradetron connector, which builds it in your account.
  2. [ 02 ]
    Save it to My Strategies

  4. [ 04 ]

    Run it
One backtest uses one credit (Free) from your wallet. A failed or errored run is refunded.
  6. [ 06 ]

In minutes you get an interactive report: every trade, P&L net of costs, the equity curve, drawdowns and a grade. Detailed reports stay live for 3 days, then archive to a summary you keep.
04 · Questions

Backtesting Nifty options, answered.

Which platforms let me backtest Nifty options on minute-level data?
Tradetron does: it replays NIFTY options on 1-minute historical data (OHLC and open interest, using real traded premiums) from January 2020, and you build the strategy without code. When you compare tools, check how far back the data goes, whether fills use real premiums or a model, and whether costs are included.
How far back does Tradetron's Nifty options data go?
To January 2020, at 1-minute resolution, for NIFTY and the other NSE index options. One backtest can cover any window up to 5 years, and the window must end at least 35 days before today.
Does a Tradetron backtest use real option prices?
Yes. The engine replays the actual traded premium and open interest for each minute and fills each leg at that minute's price, the way the live engine would. It is not a Black-Scholes estimate. Minute bars are not tick data, so the exact moment a stop or target triggers inside a minute is approximated.
Can I backtest an iron condor on Nifty weekly options?
Yes. Any option structure you can build in Tradetron, including iron condors, strangles and straddles on weekly or monthly expiries, backtests the same way: build it, save it, press Backtest.
Why must a backtest end 35 days before today?
SEBI's norms for using price data for educational purposes (circular dated 8 May 2026, effective 1 July 2026) require a 30-day lag, and Tradetron keeps a few days more. The Backtest dialog sets the latest end date for you.
How much does a backtest cost?
Nothing during launch: backtests of strategies that trade only US exchanges are unlimited and free for US accounts. No credits, no wallet, no card. Any window up to 5 years is one run; detailed reports stay live for 3 days before archiving to a summary. A strategy with a leg on any other exchange is charged as usual.
Does a good backtest mean the strategy will make money?
No. A backtest shows how fixed rules behaved on past data, with the benefit of hindsight; markets change and minute bars only approximate fills. Run the strategy in Live Offline, on live prices with no orders, before you trade with money.
