How to Build an Algo Trading Strategy Using ChatGPT

To build an algo trading strategy using ChatGPT, use it to turn your idea into exact, numbered rules and to find the gaps in them. Then build those rules in a strategy platform, backtest them, run them Live Offline, and only then connect a broker. ChatGPT designs; the platform tests and executes. With a connector like TT Assistant, both can happen in one chat.

What ChatGPT is actually good for

ChatGPT is a reasoning and writing tool. In strategy design it does three things well:

  • Turning a vague idea into explicit rules. "Sell a straddle in the morning" becomes a numbered list of conditions.
  • Finding what's undefined. It asks the questions traders skip: what if only one leg fills, what happens on expiry day, is the stop on combined premium or per leg?
  • Explaining indicators and conditions. What RSI actually computes, or how a trailing stop behaves.

What it can't do on its own: see live prices, see your positions, or place an order. Its role is upstream of execution.

An example: finding the gaps in a simple idea

Take this idea: "Short a NIFTY straddle at 9:30 am, exit at 30% of premium collected or at 3:15 pm, whichever comes first."

It reads as complete. Ask ChatGPT what's undefined and it will raise questions like these:

Gap Why it matters
Is the 30% measured on combined premium or on each leg? The two give very different exits on a trending day
Is 30% a profit target or a stop-loss? "30% of premium" can mean either
What if one leg fills and the other doesn't? You're left with a naked option
Which expiry, and what happens on expiry day? Premiums behave very differently close to expiry
How many lots? NIFTY's lot size is 65, so the rupee risk per lot is large
What if the market gaps past the stop? The exit price can be far worse than planned

Each unanswered question is a place where live results can surprise you weeks later.

Step by step: from a ChatGPT conversation to a running strategy

  1. Shape the idea and stress-test it. Ask ChatGPT to restate your idea as numbered rules: entry trigger, position size, stop-loss, target, exit. Then ask what's ambiguous. Keep going until no rule contains "roughly" or "usually".
  2. Build the rules in a strategy builder. Turn each rule into a condition on a platform that can execute it. There is no field for "about 30%": vague rules show up here.
  3. Backtest on historical data. Run the rules on past data and read the result sceptically. Ask what would make the backtest misleading, not just what it returned.
  4. Run it Live Offline. On live prices, the strategy runs and records every trade, but nothing is sent to the exchange. This shows behaviour a backtest can't, such as timing on real prices.
  5. Connect your broker and start small. Only after the strategy behaves as expected, go live with the smallest size.

Notice where ChatGPT sits: step 1, and helping you review the rest. The assistant does the thinking; the platform does the testing and execution.

Prompts you can copy

Use these with the straddle idea above, or adapt them to your own.

Turn the idea into rules:

I want to short a NIFTY straddle at 9:30 am and exit at 30% of premium collected or at 3:15 pm, whichever comes first. Restate this as explicit, numbered rules: entry trigger, position size, stop-loss, target and exit. Flag anything left ambiguous.

Find the edge cases:

For this straddle, list every edge case I haven't accounted for: gap opens, partial fills, expiry-day behaviour, holiday-shortened sessions, and what happens if one leg's stop is hit.

Compare two definitions:

Explain what a 30% stop on combined premium versus a 30% stop on each leg would mean for this straddle, with a numeric example, so I can choose one.

Review a backtest:

Here are my backtest results. What would make them misleading? List the checks I should run before trusting them.

What ChatGPT gets wrong if you don't check

How TT Assistant removes the copy-paste step

TT Assistant is a connector you add to ChatGPT, Gemini, Grok or Claude. Once you sign in with your Tradetron account, you can describe a strategy in the chat and have it built, backtested and run Live Offline in your account, from the same conversation. In ChatGPT it needs a paid plan with developer mode switched on.

Without a connector With TT Assistant
ChatGPT drafts rules; you copy them into the platform by hand The assistant builds the strategy in your account
You run the backtest yourself and paste results back The backtest runs and the summary comes back to the chat
Easy to mistype a value while copying The rules you approved are the rules that get built

This is AI-assisted design, not AI-driven trading. The AI cannot move money, and nothing goes live with real orders unless you deploy it. The strategy that runs is still a rule-based system you can open, read, backtest and change. See the full list of tools the connector exposes.

Frequently asked questions

Can ChatGPT build and run a trading strategy on its own?

No. On its own, ChatGPT has no market data, no broker connection and no way to place orders. It can help you write and review rules. With a connector such as TT Assistant, it can build and test the strategy in your Tradetron account, but live orders still run through your broker under rules you approved.

How do I turn a ChatGPT conversation into a real strategy?

Ask ChatGPT to restate your idea as explicit conditions (entry, size, stop-loss, target, exit) and to flag anything ambiguous. Build those conditions in a strategy builder, backtest them, run them Live Offline, and only then connect a broker.

What is TT Assistant?

TT Assistant is a connector you add to ChatGPT, Gemini, Grok or Claude. After you sign in with your Tradetron account, you can describe a strategy in the chat and have it built, backtested and run Live Offline in your account. The AI cannot move money.

Does TT Assistant work with the free version of ChatGPT?

In ChatGPT, the connector needs a paid plan with developer mode switched on. It also works with Gemini, Grok and Claude.

What mistakes should I watch for when using ChatGPT for trading strategies?

Logic that looks right but fails in an untested condition, and confident but outdated statements about contract details like lot sizes and expiry days. Verify exchange details yourself, and always backtest and test Live Offline before using real money.

Is using ChatGPT to build a strategy the same as using an AI trading bot?

No. Here ChatGPT helps you design rules; the rules then trade, and you can read every one of them. An AI trading bot makes the trading decision itself. Read is an AI trading bot better than rule-based algo trading for the comparison.
