NIFTY BANK options, 1-minute replay
Bank Nifty option simulator: replay any minute since January 2020
Replay a real Bank Nifty options day, minute by minute. Choose a past session, trade from the chain as it stood, step the clock and watch the P&L, payoff and Greeks move. Bank Nifty data starts on 1 January 2020, in 1-minute steps, with a 35-day lag; SEBI requires 30. The tool below opens on Bank Nifty, and the preset days work without an account.
Bank Nifty changed a lot over the years in our data. Its lot size was reset five times, its weekly expiry moved from Thursday to Wednesday and then disappeared, and the nearest contract is now a monthly one. This page sets out those changes and what they did to the price of a straddle. Compare with NIFTY or SENSEX, or go back to the hub.
Calm day: 0.31% high-low range with India VIX at 9.4, the lowest VIX of any preset. Shows how little options move when volatility is low.

How the Bank Nifty chain works in the replay
Bank Nifty strikes are 100 points apart. The chain shows 15 strikes either side of the at-the-money strike, so 1,500 points each way, with Delta, IV, OI and OI change beside each price. Prices are traded prices, and a strike that did not trade in a minute shows its last price, greyed. Nothing is modelled.
Since the weeklies ended, fewer expiry tabs are listed on any given day. Use the tabs to see what was available on the date you choose.
Your first Bank Nifty trade, in two clicks
Pick a preset day from the chips under the date bar. In the chain, click S on the call and S on the put at the middle row, the at-the-money strike, to sell a straddle, or B on both to buy one. Each click adds one lot at that minute's price. Then move the clock and watch the position panel.
Without an account you can place trades and move the clock once. To keep going you sign up free, and your trades come with you.
Bank Nifty lot size history
The replay sizes each leg by the lot of its own contract, keyed to the expiry date:
- 20 for contracts expiring up to 23 July 2020
- 25 for expiries from 30 July 2020 to 20 July 2023
- 15 for expiries from 27 July 2023 to 31 December 2024
- 30 for expiries from 30 January 2025 to 30 June 2025
- 35 for expiries from 31 July 2025 to 30 December 2025
- 30 for expiries from 27 January 2026
The lot changes what the same price means. A 700-point straddle is 17,500 rupees of premium at the 25 lot and 10,500 at the 15 lot. The table follows exchange circulars and is keyed to expiry dates, so the weeks when two lots traded side by side are not modelled.
Bank Nifty expiry history: Thursday, Wednesday, then monthly
Weekly Bank Nifty options expired on Thursdays when our data starts, and the last Thursday weekly in our data is 31 August 2023. From 6 September 2023 the weekly expiry sat on Wednesday, and 13 November 2024 is the last weekly we hold. After that just monthly contracts trade: 27 November 2024 and 24 December 2024, then the last Thursday of each month from 30 January 2025 to 28 August 2025, and the last Tuesday from 30 September 2025.
That change matters for practice. A weekly expiry day gave you a fresh contract to study every few days. In the monthly era the nearest expiry is between one day and about five weeks away, and the day after a monthly expiry the next one can be five weeks out, so a replay of 2025 or 2026 has few expiry-day sessions. To practise the weekly rhythm, pick a day between September 2023 and November 2024, or any year before that. To practise the monthly rhythm, pick a 2025 or 2026 day in the last week before expiry and again in the first week after it, and compare how the straddle's price changes with the days left.
What a Bank Nifty at-the-money straddle cost, from our data
We measured this from our own prices. For each trading day from 1 January 2020 to 11 September 2026 (1,636 of 1,651 days had usable prices), we took the close of the 09:19 minute, the at-the-money strike, and the call and put of the nearest expiry at least a day away. Implied volatility is solved from both legs with Black-76 on the forward the pair implies. Medians are shown, with the 10th to 90th percentile range in brackets.
- Implied volatility at 09:20, all days: 19.6% (12.0% to 40.7%)
- By year: 2020 39.9%, 2021 26.2%, 2022 25.0%, 2023 14.7%, 2024 17.6%, 2025 13.5%, 2026 so far 15.0%
- Wednesday-weekly era, 6 September 2023 to 13 November 2024: 672 points, 1.41% of the index (0.91% to 2.05%); one day before expiry 482 points (0.95%); four to seven days out 776 points (1.59%)
- Monthly era, from 2025: one to seven days from expiry 677 points (1.22%); eight to fifteen days 1,128 points (2.00%); sixteen to forty days 1,604 points (2.91%)
The era split is the point. A nearest-expiry straddle now often has weeks to run, so its price in points is not comparable with a weekly one. Compare it by days to expiry, as above. Multiply points by the lot to get rupees: for contracts eight or more days out since September 2025, about 46,000 rupees per lot at the lot of the day.
Three Bank Nifty days to replay
23 December 2025: a calm session
Bank Nifty opened +0.08% and closed -0.01% inside a 0.31% range, with India VIX at 9.4, the lowest of any preset day. At 09:20 the 59,400 straddle for the 30 December expiry, seven days out, was priced at 656.9 points, 1.11% of the index, at an implied volatility of 9.7%. The chain is thinner than NIFTY's at the open, so the preset starts at 09:20. Open 23 December 2025 at 09:20.
5 June 2024: a Wednesday expiry, the day after the election results
The weekly contract expired that afternoon. Bank Nifty opened +0.62%, ranged 6.18% and closed +3.51%, while India VIX fell 26.4% to 19.1. At 09:20 the 47,000 straddle of that day's own contract was priced at 793.0 points, 1.69% of the index. Replay it to see implied volatility fall after an event, while the index keeps moving. Open 5 June 2024 at 09:20.
24 February 2022: a volatility spike on a Thursday expiry
Markets opened on news of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Bank Nifty gapped down 2.98%, closed 6.15% below the previous close, and India VIX rose 31.3% to 32.8. By 09:20 the 36,400 straddle of that day's contract was priced at 562.5 points, 1.55% of the index. Start at 09:15 and watch both legs through the morning. Open 24 February 2022 at 09:15.
After the replay
If a Bank Nifty setup holds up in practice, describe it to Cookie: entry time, strikes as distance from the at-the-money strike, and your exit. Cookie writes it as an algo, you backtest it, and you deploy with your broker when ready. Algo trading carries risk, and a backtest describes the past. Read the manual replay to algo guide for a worked example, or the guide to practising with replay.
Questions traders ask
Does Bank Nifty still have weekly expiries in the simulator?
Not after 13 November 2024, which is the last weekly in our data. From late November 2024 just monthly contracts trade. Before that, weeklies expired on Wednesdays from 6 September 2023 and on Thursdays before it.
What is the Bank Nifty lot size in the simulator?
It depends on the contract's expiry: 20, 25, 15, 30, 35 and now 30 for contracts expiring from 27 January 2026. The full list is on this page, under lot size history.
How far back does the Bank Nifty data go?
To 1 January 2020, in 1-minute steps. The most recent replayable day is 35 days old; SEBI requires 30. The preset days work without an account, and a free Tradetron login opens every trading day.
Why does a Bank Nifty straddle cost more now than in 2023?
Mostly because the nearest expiry is now a monthly contract, often weeks away, while in 2023 it was a weekly a few days away. Compared by days to expiry, the prices are close: see the figures on this page.
Where can I practise Bank Nifty expiry days?
Pick a Wednesday between 6 September 2023 and 13 November 2024, such as 5 June 2024, or a Thursday before September 2023. Weekly expiry days after that date no longer exist.
Is Bank Nifty replay data modelled or filled in?
No. Each price is a traded price from the minute you are on. A strike that did not trade shows its last price, greyed. Implied volatility and Greeks are calculated from those traded prices.
