Nifty 50 and Sensex Directional Hybrid PS
by Algo with CA Siddharth ✉ contactDescription
This is a directional, positional options strategy designed to capture short-term momentum in index options during the Nifty expiry cycle. The strategy primarily trades on the Nifty 50 index, while Sensex positions are deployed during the final two trading days of the Nifty weekly expiry cycle to optimize the strategy to its best.
The strategy can be started anytime during the morning market session based on deployment convenience. Earlier deployment generally provides greater flexibility for recovery and adjustment management if the market initially moves against the position.
The system dynamically identifies and aligns with the prevailing market direction. It maintains option-writing positions with close hedges, allowing controlled exposure while retaining flexibility for adaptive adjustments as market conditions evolve. Unlike short-duration weekly systems, positions are carried forward and ultimately exited on the monthly expiry of Nifty.
Risk and profit management are handled through dynamic hedging and banking-based adjustment logic rather than fixed stop losses or predefined profit targets.
Key Highlights
Primary Instrument: Nifty 50 Options (weekly expiry cycle)
Additional Instrument: Sensex Options during the final two trading days of the Nifty weekly expiry cycle
Strategy Type: Directional / Positional
Deployment Timing: Can be started anytime during the morning market session before 9.35 AM
Exit: On Nifty monthly expiry
Position Structure: Option writing with close hedging
Risk Management: Dynamic hedge and banking-based adjustments
(No fixed Stop Loss / Target)
Objective: Capture directional momentum and premium decay through adaptive position management
Mechanism of Banking-Based Adjustments
When the market moves favorably, the strategy systematically banks partial profits from the profitable side and utilizes those gains to adjust, hedge, or defend the adverse side if required. This process helps in reducing drawdowns, stabilizing the equity curve, and sustaining positions without requiring continuous additional capital deployment.
Risk in Case of Opposite Gap-Up or Gap-Down
Since the strategy operates without a fixed stop loss, it remains exposed to overnight or opening gap movements against its directional bias. In such scenarios, option premiums on the adverse side may expand sharply, leading to temporary mark-to-market drawdowns.
Although the strategy may gradually attempt recovery through subsequent dynamic adjustments and hedging techniques, strong one-sided trending or gap-driven markets can still result in significant interim losses.
Therefore, maintaining an adequate capital buffer, disciplined risk allocation, and sufficient risk tolerance is essential for smooth execution of the strategy.
