Meta Title: Live Offline: Test a US Options Strategy With No Orders
Meta Description: Live Offline runs your strategy on live US prices during the session, shows every trade it would have placed and sends nothing to your broker. How to use it well.

Every automated strategy has a gap between "the backtest looked fine" and "I am comfortable letting this trade my account." Live Offline is the mode built for that gap. Your strategy runs on live US market prices during the real session, decides exactly as it would live, records every trade it would have placed with the price at that moment, and sends nothing to any broker. There is no money in it, no broker connection needed, and one Live Offline deployment is included on the free plan.

This guide covers what Live Offline does, what it cannot show you, and a four-week routine for testing a US options strategy with it.

:::takeaways
- Live Offline runs your rules on live prices in real time and places no order. It needs no broker account.
- It catches what a backtest cannot: the behaviour of your rules on today's news, today's option chain and today's clock.
- Its fills are the quoted price at the moment of the decision; real fills on options can be worse. Read the P&L as a check on the logic, not a forecast.
- Treat each session as a test with a question: did the entry fire when I meant, did the exits race correctly, did the time exit hold?
- Move to a live broker only after the questions stop producing surprises.

## What Live Offline is, exactly

When you deploy a strategy on Tradetron you choose a mode. **Live Auto** sends orders to the connected broker. **Live Offline** does everything except that last step.

During the US session (9:30 am to 4:00 pm ET for stocks; options on SPX, XSP, SPY and QQQ trade until 4:15 pm ET), the strategy evaluates its conditions on live prices, enters and exits positions in its own ledger, applies stops, targets and time exits, and writes a log line for each decision. You see the open position, the running P&L and the trade list exactly as you would in Live Auto. The one difference is that no order is created at any broker.

## What a backtest cannot tell you, and Live Offline can

A backtest on Tradetron runs your rules over years of minute-level data for SPX, SPY, QQQ, NDX and XSP options, 0DTE to monthlies, with the costs you set. It is the right first test, and its results are hypothetical.

:::warning Hypothetical, backtested results
Hypothetical, backtested results. Not actual trading. Costs and slippage as stated. Past performance does not guarantee future results.
:::

But a backtest is quiet about several things that Live Offline shows at once:

- **Today's chain.** Did the strike rule pick the contract you meant on a day the strikes are $1 apart near the money and $5 apart further out?
- **Today's clock.** Does the 10:00 am ET entry window actually open at 10:00 am ET on a day with an early close, or after a holiday?
- **Today's news.** How do your rules behave on a CPI morning, a Fed afternoon, an index rebalance? The backtest averaged those days; Live Offline shows one at a time.
- **Your own reactions.** Watching a Live Offline position go against you for forty minutes, and seeing the stop hold, teaches you whether you can let the live version do the same.

## What Live Offline cannot show

Be honest with yourself about three limits:

1. **Fills.** Live Offline records the quoted price at the moment of the decision. Real options fills, especially on four-leg structures and on same-day contracts near the close, can be worse. Add a margin for slippage when you read the P&L.
2. **Broker behaviour.** Order rejections, approval levels, buying power checks and partial fills exist only once a broker is connected. The first live week with one contract is the test for those.
3. **You.** Live Offline cannot tell you whether you will keep the strategy running through a bad week. Only running it can.

## A four-week routine

Here is a routine that works for a US options strategy such as a SPY same-day condor or a weekly SPX credit spread.

:::steps
1. **Week 1: does it fire?** Deploy Live Offline. Each day, check one thing: did the entry happen in the window you set, with the strikes you described? Fix the rule, not the result.
2. **Week 2: do the exits race correctly?** Watch the profit target, the stop and the time exit. Each should fire for the reason you expect, and the time exit should fire on a day nothing else did.
3. **Week 3: a hard day.** Keep it running through at least one scheduled event (jobs report, CPI, a Fed decision). Read the log afterwards: would you have accepted every decision?
4. **Week 4: compare to the backtest.** Line up the month's Live Offline trades against the same rules' backtest for a recent month. Large differences usually mean a rule is doing something you did not intend.
:::

The point is to leave each week with an answer to one question, not to grow a P&L figure. A month of Live Offline that produced a loss and no surprises is a better result than a month of gains you cannot explain.

## Moving to live

When the questions stop producing surprises, connect a broker and redeploy the same strategy in Live Auto with one contract. Alpaca, tastytrade, Interactive Brokers, Tradier, TradeStation, Webull, E*TRADE, TradeZero and Robinhood connect to Tradetron; [here is what happens to your orders](https://tradetron.tech/blog/connect-alpaca-tradier-webull-tradetron-orders). Keep the Live Offline copy running alongside for the first weeks: the two logs side by side show you exactly how much the broker and the fills change the picture.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is Live Offline free?

One Live Offline deployment is included on the free plan, with no broker and no card. Paid plans, from the Starter plan at $15 a month, include Live Offline on every strategy alongside the live deployments; see the [pricing page](https://tradetron.tech/pricing?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=post&utm_campaign=us_launch&ref=us-blog).

### Do I need a broker account to use it?

No. Live Offline uses Tradetron's own US market data. A broker is needed only when you switch to Live Auto.

### Does Live Offline run outside US market hours?

The strategy evaluates when the market it trades is open. For SPX and XSP options that is the regular session; a strategy set to trade the overnight session would evaluate then.

:::note
Tradetron is trading software, not a broker-dealer, investment adviser or custodian. Your orders are placed by your own broker in your own account under your rules. Live Offline results are simulated and are not actual trading.
